Google and Bing dominate top ten companies for job-seekers in 2011, while other tech companies include IBM, Intel, and Apple as the world’s most attractive employers

The 2011’s data shows that most job-seekers prefer to work for American technology companies.  Bing’s top rival and search giant Google ranks number one on both categories business and engineering for this year’s global talent attraction index published by Universum. 

Bing’s parent Microsoft ranks considerable high on several categories as the world’s largest software company mostly beat out Intel and Apple for people seeking engineering careers.  Bing’s parent was ranked two spots behind its closest rival and top-rank Google.  At number two is IBM.

The list of world’s top companies for job-seekers in 2011 was released by Universum who is an International employer branding company.  The annual report shows global top 50 companies for job-seekers with a title “The World’s Most Attractive Employers 2011,” click here to download in .pdf format.  The data was crunched from samples of 160,000 career seekers who have either a business or engineering background.   Data for the report was collected from 12 largest and most advanced economies in the world including America, Brazil, Britain, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Russia, and Spain.

Bing Maps adds detailed airport maps and helping travelers to navigate thru 42 major and medium airports in America

Domestic and International travelers will get more helps from Bing Maps, as the decision engine just added detailed airport maps for 42 major and medium airports in America.  Bing Maps team promises to add more airport maps later on. 

The new airport maps provide information on car parking areas, airline ticketing, domestic and international terminals, gates, car rental counters, baggage claims, money exchange kiosks, etc.  The new maps also let users to search for directory of airlines, cafes, and restaurants (incl. Businesses A-Z) .

As per Bing Maps team, here is a list of maps for 42 major and medium airports in America:

With the help of search engine mapping features (i.e., Google StreetView or Bing Maps Streetside) and social media (incl. Facebook, Twitter & Foursquare), burglars are planning to find their best targets

Based on a small sample of 50 ex-burglars, a Britain’s security firm Friedland found modern burglars planed their targets by using search engines mapping features such as Google StreetView or Bing Maps Streetside.  The report with a title "UK Home Security Week 2011" was published by Friedland and later reported by Britain’s Sky News this week.

The findings show that 78% of the 50 ex-burglars have utilized social media including Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare to plan their targets (for example, checking location and status updates).  While 74% of the samples noted that search engines mapping features such as Google Street View or Bing Maps Streetside was being used to plot their best targets.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Bing: two research teams in China and America to develop new index serving platform for the decision engine

The decision engine just released a glimpse of information regarding the next major project to combine two super-power teams from China and America.  Both teams also celebrate the 20th anniversary of Microsoft Research this week. 

Similar to Ang Lee’s movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), the project is dubbed “Tiger” and coincidently with Qi Lu, the decision engine president and the highest ranking Bing’s executive was born in 1962, he is a tiger, as per Wikipedia.com. 

According to the official site, the Tiger project will help users who conducting search and get search results faster and better as Bing will be checking its index thru advanced Solid State Disk technology.   The website noted that Tiger is “the next-generation index serving platform for Bing. Index serving is the most critical infrastructure for any search engine. The new architecture in Tiger leverages emerging Solid State Disk (SSD) technology to improve overall efficiency and open doors for further improvements.”  The team also released a video, click here to watch.

One-Stop and One-Place for Deals: the decision engine enhances its deals section and aggregates over 200,000 deals in America from top providers and local retailers such as Groupon, LivingSocial, etc.

Over the past weekend, the decision engine modified its Bing Deals section by “harnessing deals from major providers and retailers” reported Bing team.  The Bing Deals section is now an aggregator of all type of deals in the Internet.  In order to browse and find the best deals easily, Bing team urged its users to visit www.bing.com/deals frequently. 

In one-stop and one-place, users can find over 200,000 deals in America from top providers and local retailers such as Groupon, LivingSocial, etc. 

The latest update for Bing Deals is catered for PC users and also incorporated many features that were made available for Bing Mobile Deals at m.bing.com.

HTML5 homepage goes live! Bing releases the first ever dynamic video homepage (see Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming)

As clock turned to 12:01am Pacific Time on Friday morning (September 23) and to celebrate this year’s first day of Fall season, the decision engine released the first ever HTML5 video on its home page.  The video was produced by Bob Glusic of Wilderness Video and was taken in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming (a very beautiful park located in Midwest of America).  In order to view the video, users must have HTML5 enabled browser, such as Internet Explorer 9. 

According to Stephanie Horstmanshof of Bing team who handles the decision engine’s home page, the first ever video is only available for users in America for now.  At the same time, the team is working hard to release a similar HTML5 feature to International users soon.

One year and counting, hm . . . maybe . . . Bing Rewards Preview to end on December 31, 2011, while all credits will expire on March 31, 2012

 
Bing Rewards Preview celebrates its first birthday this week.  To celebrate the 1st birthday, each of active users will receive a 25 point bonus.   So far, the decision engine users have accumulated over 493,977,000 points.  Xbox LIVE, Zune pass, charitable donations, and Facebook credits, are among the top four most popular picks by users.  To deter frauds, only users who live in America can join the program. 

 
During this week’s Financial Analyst Meeting 2011, executives from Bing’s division have noted that they are trying to save money for a long run. The team may be reconsidered to shoot down or extend the Rewards program.   As of now, the program will end on December 31, 2011.  All credits will expire on March 31, 2012.  Read the fine print: “The Bing Rewards Preview ends on December 31, 2011. Bing Rewards will stop counting your searches and collecting information when the program ends on December 31, 2011 or when you discontinue participation in the Bing Rewards Preview. Credits accumulated expire March 31, 2012. During the Preview, unredeemed credits shall expire if you do not earn any credits for 180 days.”

The decision engine adds “Action Buttons” to help users to make quicker decisions in seven categories include airlines, parcel and mail couriers, restaurants, banks, rental cars, hotels reservation, and downloading software

Bing added new features on the search results which the team called it “Action Buttons.”  Those buttons are direct links to important pages within a website to help users to make quicker decisions and to complete tasks faster. 

In its initial launch, the decision engine added action links in seven categories include airlines, parcel and mail couriers, restaurants, banks, rental cars, hotels reservation, and downloading software.

Below is an example of these “Action Buttons” showing on right hand side.  Users can type-in keywords search, for example “united airlines.”  On the results page, there are three new buttons on right hand side include links to important page within the United.com website “Check in,” “Flight status,” and “Book a flight.”

Yahoo! Search in Far East and Southeast Asian countries is now powered by Bing: the decision engine has completed migration in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam

The Search Alliance Bing and Yahoo has completed migration of search results in several Far East and Southeast Asian countries including Taiwan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, as per Yahoo official blog post.  The month of August was a great month as the combo has switched organic search results from ‘old’ Yahoo system to Bing system in several regions.  The team had completed migration in several major European countries, South America, Australia, and top Arabic language countries in the Middle-East. 

The first transition of Yahoo! Search to the decision engine occurred in America and Canada in August 2010 after both companies signed a 10-years global search alliance in July 2009.  The migration was paused for a short period of time in late April this year.  This was due to concerns from former Yahoo’s CEO Bartz regarding revenue per search (RPS) as revenues generated from Bing’s adCenter were less than expected.

Google+ introduces its 100th feature and lets everyone to signup for the social network services

After about 90 days in testing mode, Google+ social network is now open for everyone to join.  According to a blog post by Vic Gundotra, Sr. VP of Engineering, “the past 12 weeks we’ve been in field trial” and later Gundotra added “we’re ready to move from field trial to beta, and introduce our 100th feature: open signups.”

In the latest update, Google+ added search functionality with a search box.  It also improved and added several hangouts features with live streaming video via smartphones.  Other extras include more sharing on photos, documents, drawings, etc.

Bing’s rival launches Google Wallet mobile app by partnering with Citi, MasterCard, Sprint (Nexus S 4G) and First Data

The decision engine’s rival has officially launched Google Wallet mobile app by partnering with Citi, MasterCard, Sprint and First Data.  The app was first announced on May 26 this year.  This mobile app acts as wallet when paying at cashiers by utilizing the latest mobile technology dubbed as near field communication (NFC).  However, users still have to inserting their credit cards info (i.e., Citi MasterCard number and expiration date).  Google also has a special offer ($10 free bonus) if users would like to use Google Prepaid Card.   Future version will include other credit cards providers include Visa, Discover and American Express.

During the intro period, the mobile app will only available to users who subscribe to Sprint as their mobile provider.  The mobile “Wallet” app will only work via Nexus S 4G phones, the Google branded handset.  According to Google blog post, the mobile app will get updated “through an over-the-air ” technology.

Aside for replacing credit cards and printed paper or coin money, the mobile Wallet app can store coupons, special deals and offers, for easy redeem or get cash back during check out at cashiers.  Other items that could be stored include airline boarding passes, movie and concert tickets, and frequent flyer points.

Catch Yahoo If Bing Can: with plenty of cash on hand, the decision engine eyeing Yahoo purchase to unite the Search Alliance

An interesting piece of news from Silicon Valley on Friday morning written by Nicholas Carlson of businessinsider.com, citing a reliable source of Bing’s sister company MSN, saying that the decision engine eyeing Yahoo purchase.  As businessinsider.com put it “…Yahoo is more attractive to Microsoft than AOL.”

The Search Alliance Bing and Yahoo have recently captured about 31% shares of search engine market in America during the month of August 2011.  The combo Internet properties continue to grab shares from Google. 

Bing and Yahoo signed a ten-year global search agreement in July 2009, while last week, Yahoo ousted its CEO Carol Bartz.  Many of the decision engine’s engineers were from Yahoo Search including Bing’s President Qi Lu.

During this past Wednesday’s annual meeting with Wall Street analysts and fund managers, reuters.com reported Bing's parent has at least $53 billion cash on hand.  With today’s valuation, Yahoo’s price tag is about $20 billion.

The decision engine to get more personalized and more relevant search results by launching a new feature dubbed “Adaptive Search”

As keywords search can have so many different meanings, therefore, to better understand users’ intent, the decision engine launched a new feature dubbed “Adaptive Search” this week.  This new feature will help to get more personalized and more relevant search results to users.  As Bing team noted “You generally search with a clear intent in mind but, without context, the phrase you enter may have a very different meaning to someone else.”

In order to get more relevant search results, Bing could be pulling data from history of users searches, Facebook account location info and friends (for users who signed in), PC’s browsing cookies, Windows Live ID, etc.  While the decision engine is very strict on privacy issue, Bing team also warned users and stated “…if you would prefer that results are not customized based on your past search activity, you can "Clear" and “Turn off” search history at any time.”

An example of the new feature could be found on the official blog post, as Aidan Crook of Bing wrote “For example, if you were to type “CSI” odds are you’re interested in the TV show. But, if you live in Twin Falls, you may, instead, be looking for the College of Southern Idaho. When we think about ambiguity at Bing, understanding what your query represents (primetime entertainment or a college in Idaho) is only one step.”

3-in-1: three major display advertising Internet properties include Bing, Yahoo, and AOL to cross sell ads remnants on one another’s websites

In order to fight Google’s dominance in the display advertising market, executives from three major display advertising Internet properties include Bing, Yahoo, and AOL, reportedly shared their frustrations at a dining table in Manhattan, New York City, on Tuesday night (September 13).  According to a blog post by Wall Street Journal’s allthingsd.com, the three teams and bunch ad buyers, marketers, and publishers, met and discussed the possibility to form an online advertising alliance.   Instead of selling their graphic ads cheap to middle-men such to ad networks, the three Internet properties can cross sell their ads remnants to each other.

According to allthingsd.com, executives from 5to1.com were also come for the dinner meeting.  5to1.com is an ads serving company that was acquired by Yahoo this year.  allthingsd.com speculated that the online advertising alliance could apply the business model similar to 5to1.com.  As the 5to1.com website noted “With 5to1, people – not algorithms – fill unsold premium inventory with 100% relevant, high-quality advertisements, thereby creating a positive brand experience for publishers, advertisers and end-users alike.” 

After the dinner meeting, according to allthingsd.com, the initial plan is to start the business sometime before this year’s Xmas holiday.   Therefore, the alliance could start cross selling ads remnants on one another’s websites soon.  

Exactly 31% shares for the Search Alliance: Bing captured 14.7% shares and Yahoo had 16.3% shares of search engine market in August 2011, while Google dropped below 65% shares for the first time since September 2009

The Search Alliance Bing and Yahoo gained shares while the world’s largest search engine dropped to below 65% shares for the first time since September 2009.  According to comScore dataset, the combo Bing and Yahoo captured a total of 31.0% search engine market shares in August 2011, compared to July which was at 30.5% shares (an increase of 0.5% shares).

Bing’s August search engine market share increased to 14.7% shares from 14.4% shares in July, or an increase of 0.3% shares.

Yahoo Search powered by Bing increased a little bit to 16.3% shares from 16.1% shares in July, or an increase of 0.2% shares.

Google's search engine market shares in America dropped to below 65% for the first time since September 2009, as per comScore. The giant search engine’s August market share dropped to 64.8% shares from 65.1% shares in July (a drop of 0.3%).

Bing for Mobile adds more features include integration with Facebook “Liked Results,” better listings of videos and movies

Bing for Mobile team just announced several new features to enhance the decision engine on the go.  Mobile Internet users can now utilize the decision engine to get opinions from Facebook friends and family via “Liked Results” integration.  This feature was officially launched in mid-May of this year for desktops users, but now is available for mobile users.

Bing for Mobile also enhanced the Videos section with better navigation and more varieties of videos from providers such as Hulu, YouTube, and others. 

With the decision engine's exclusive partnership with the world's largest social networking site, Bing users  can ask Facebook friends and family to recommend a movie while at the same time can check into reviews and critic ratings.

The Search Alliance Bing and Yahoo captured 28.99% of all searches conducted in America in August 2011 while Google continued to drop to 65.09% shares

The combo Bing and Yahoo remained stable and continued to gain searches conducted in America in August 2011.  According to the latest data from Hitwise, the decision engine captured 13.10% shares in August, compared to 12.98% shares in July, or an increase of 0.12% shares.

Yahoo Search captured a total of 15.89% shares in August, compared to 15.07% shares in July, or an increase of 0.82% shares.

The Search Alliance combo totaled 28.99% shares in August, compared to 28.05% shares in July, or an increase of 0.94% shares.

The world’s largest search engine continued to lose its dominance as it dropped to 65.09% shares in August, compared to 66.05% shares in July, or a drop of 0.96% shares.

Hitwise data was based on sample of about 10 million Internet users in America.  For the month of August, data was captured for four weeks and ended on August 27, 2011.  Hitwise only collected web searches and excluded mobile searches from the samples.

Who needs Yelp or Bing Local? The search engine giant eats Zagat alive, as the acquisition will boost Google Local search

The search engine giant company has acquired Zagat.   Zagat provides reviews, ratings and insights for restaurants and places.  The reviewers travelled around the world to find the best of the best.  Google didn’t reveal the price tag, but several tech watchers believe the cost of the acquisition will be less than $100 million but more than $50 million.

Early this morning, Google’s VP for Local, Maps and Location Services, Marissa Mayer, wrote “…Zagat will be a cornerstone of our local offering…”  By integrating Zagat into Google Local, this will put an end to Yelp who also provides reviews and ratings for restaurants and places.  While Bing Local Search relies on Facebook’s friends and family to give their opinions, the decision engine could also be suffered from the Google and Zagat combo.

Zagat has over 30 years experiences and its reviews, ratings and insights are used worldwide and in many languages. Mayer later added “Zagat provides people with a democratized, authentic and comprehensive view of where to eat, drink, stay, shop and play worldwide based on millions of reviews and ratings.”

Bing loses its brain as one of the top architects of the decision engine resigned and to pursue a new career as investor

One of the top guns of Bing’s decision engine architect, Barney Pell, has decided to pursue other career.   Mary-Jo Foley of All About Microsoft wrote a post about the big name defection from Bing team last night.  As Pell’s Twitter profile noted “Was Bing Architect.”  Pell tweeted and confirmed his resignation at 6:55pm PST on September 6, 2011, and wrote “Yesterday was my last day at Microsoft. I'm now back to full-time angel investor and parallel entrepreneur!”

The official title for Pell at Bing team was “Chief Architect for Local Search.”  Bing’s parent acquired Pell’s startup of 65 persons company, Powerset, on July 1, 2008, for a roughly $100 million.  Powerset’s advantage was its natural-language search and has been integrated into Bing decision engine since launch in 2009.  After the acquisition, Powerset’s headquarter remained in San Francisco while Bing team is located in Seattle area.

Bing releases a new homepage: moving eight sections include “Images,” “Videos,” “Shopping,” and others to the top navigation bar

One day after the Labor Day vacation in America, Bing team returned to work and released a new homepage.  Text links to all eight sections include “Images,” “Videos,” “Shopping,” and others are now being moved to the top navigation bar.  The Facebook icon and the number of “Like” also moved up a little bit.  The new homepage also spotted with a larger font size for today’s hot topics "Popular now" at the bottom of the page. 

The old homepage has eight vertical links to sections include Images, Videos, and others, at left, on top of today’s background photo. The new homepage moved those eight links to the top navigation bar, on top of the screen, and re-arranged horizontally.

Several tests of the new homepage were spotted in early April of this year after Microsoft’s “Imagine 2011” event.

Bigger Bing making better decision while sticking together with Twitter to improve social signals: the decision engine and the popular real-time messenger to renew their relationship

At 3:17pm PST on Tuesday, September 6, 2011, Bing’s Twitter account sent a tweet regarding a partnership renewal between the decision engine and the popular real-time social messenger company.  A tweet by Bing account read “Let's say we stick together and do bigger and better things?”  The tweet was first reported by a popular tech site thenextweb.com.  The tech site later updated the post and wrote “Microsoft has confirmed that the partnership has been renewed.”

With the launch of Google Plus One in the late March of this year and continues gaining momentum with several million users, the giant search engine decided to end their relationship with Twitter.  On the other hand, the decision engine remained silence for few months until they announced the partnership this afternoon.  Twitter really needs the cash from big pocket Bing’s parent to continue providing real-time social messenger services (analysts believe the renewal contract will cost about $30 million per year).

While Bing has been integrating heavily with Facebook social networking, for the future to come, Bing will integrate more stuff with Twitter.  For now, Bing has made a better decision by sticking together with Twitter to provide real-time social search results and improve the decision engine's social signals.

Bing is now the top ten largest app on the Facebook platform, it’s at number nine with about 28.7 million on September 5, 2011

One of the popular tech watcher and blogger, Inside Facebook, reported over the past weekend before the Labor Day holiday that Bing app for social networking has been holding a top ten spot on the Facebook platform in terms of monthly active users (MAU). 

While Facebook gamers and fans continue to keep several games (incl. CityVille, FarmVille, etc.) at the top ten largest app on the Facebook platform, the world’s largest social networking site also integrates with other technology companies such as Microsoft.  The giant software company’s involvement was due to business deals and capital investment.  Those deals have made Bing as a very close friend of Facebook.  The current integration between Bing and Facebook also allows the decision engine users to sign in via Facebook, or vis-versa.  Later after login, Bing users can click on “Like” button on search results and creating social signals.

The Bing decision engine app has been moving up-and-down on the top ten largest app.  According to appdata.com metric, as we published this blog on Monday (Sept 5) afternoon, Bing is now at number nine with about 28.7 million on September 5, 2011.

Other Bing’s family on the top ten largest app on the Facebook platform also includes Windows Live Messenger.  Windows Live Messenger app for Facebook is in tenth place at 21.6 million on September 5, 2011.

Search/decision engines, social signals, and Facebook’s “like” button: website activities that could determine search results and rankings

An interesting blog post published a couple days ago and written by Duane Forrester, Sr. Product Manager for the decision engine’s Webmaster Program, regarding the recent hot topic on the social signals.  Forrester’s explained two concepts, link farm and “like” farm.  

The important of link to website is also explained.   Due to increasing value of back-links, Forrester believes many websites have been trying to add or pay for more links that causing a term called link spam. 

Forrester believes that the recent use of social signals on search results could trigger high volume of Facebook’s ‘like’ signal which may be intentionally helping some website rankings.  As Forrester wrote “You pay someone to like your site, content or whatever, and they go out across their network and like you.”

To distinguish between the two concepts, Forrester showed a graph with red dots representing like activities, while blue dots depicting friends and fans liking the same activity.  With red dots and blue dots activities, search/decision engine could “seeing patterns online.”   Forrester noted “in most cases, if we spot like farm activity, we simply ignore the signal.”

Bing’s partner Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is at the top of Vanity Fair's 2011 New Establishment List, while two Googlers are at number two on the list

Vanity Fair just releases their annual top 50 New Establishment list.  According to vanityfair.com, the term of New Establishment List means people who are “an innovative new breed of buccaneering visionaries, engineering prodigies, and entrepreneurs.” 

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg retains its position as the number one on the list for the past two consecutive years.  No one from Bing’s parent company was on the top 50 list.  There is no question that Facebook is more important and more popular in the technology world today than Bing. 

Two Googlers are on the list at number two include both founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page.  Other people in technology world include: (3) Jeff Bezos of Amazon, (4) Tim Cook and Jonathan Ive of Apple, (5) Jack Dorsey of Square and Twitter, (6) Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz of Andreessen Horowitz venture capital, (7) Reed Hastings of Netflix, and (8) John Lasseter of Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios.
